So You Want to Start Earning Rewards? Welcome, We've Been Expecting You

The beginner's guide that doesn't talk down to you. No jargon. No gatekeeping. Just the first three moves that change everything.

Ah, a newcomer. Welcome. Pull up a chair. Let me tell you about the world you've been living in without knowing it.

Every time you've bought something online with a debit card and no cashback portal, you've left money on the table. I'm not talking pocket change — I'm talking hundreds, sometimes thousands per year. Just sitting there. Unclaimed. Waving at you as you walked past.

But that's the old you. The new you starts today.

Move 1: Install a Cashback Browser Extension

This is the lowest-effort, highest-return thing you'll do all year. Install a cashback extension — Rakuten is the most popular, and it works. When you visit a store that offers cashback, a little popup appears. You click it. You shop normally. Money appears in your account later.

That's it. That's the whole move. No catch. No gimmick. Just free money that's been available to you this entire time.

I'm going to need a moment because thinking about all the cashback I missed before I knew about this physically pains me.

Move 2: Get a Real Credit Card

If you're swiping a debit card or a basic no-rewards credit card, you are donating money to the universe. A 2% cashback card with no annual fee takes 10 minutes to apply for and earns you 2% on everything for the rest of your life.

On $2,000/month in spending, that's $480/year. For doing literally nothing different except using a different card. This isn't financial advice (I'm a deals guy, not a financial advisor), but I will say this: debit cards at checkout make me want to cry.

Move 3: Stack One Time

Your first stack is a rite of passage. Here's what you do: go to your cashback portal, click through to a retailer, buy something you were already going to buy, and pay with your rewards card.

Two layers. Two sources of earnings on one purchase. When that cashback notification hits and you see the points post to your card, something clicks in your brain. A switch flips. You'll never shop the unoptimized way again.

What NOT to Do

Don't sign up for 6 credit cards at once. Start with one good one.

Don't buy things BECAUSE they're on sale. A deal on something you don't need isn't a deal — it's an expense with better marketing.

Don't overcomplicate it. Portal plus card. That's your foundation. Build on it later when you're ready.

Your First Month

Set a goal: earn $30 in cashback and rewards in your first 30 days just from normal spending. Not extra spending — normal spending. Track it. Watch it grow. And when you hit that $30, remember that it was always there. You just had to reach out and grab it.

Now go forth and never pay retail again. We'll be here when you're ready for the advanced stuff.
