Apple Watch Buying Guide 2026: Which Model Is Right for You?

Three models, nine configurations, and one decision tree that we spent an unreasonable amount of time diagramming on a whiteboard. The whiteboard photograph has been withheld.

The Current Lineup

As of early 2026, Apple sells three Apple Watch models. This is fewer than the number of iPhone models Apple sells (six) but more than the number of Mac Pro models (one, lonely, expensive). The Editorial Staff finds the three-model structure manageable. We have prepared a guide for each.

Model 1: Apple Watch SE (2nd Generation)

Price: $249 MSRP / ~$199 street

The SE is Apple's answer to the question "What if the Apple Watch cost less?" It achieves this by removing features that most people do not know they are missing, which is the most effective form of cost reduction.

What it has:

  • S8 chip (two generations old; still fast enough that you will not notice)
  • Heart rate sensor, fall detection, crash detection, Emergency SOS
  • Accelerometer, gyroscope, compass
  • Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi, optional LTE
  • Water resistant to 50 meters
  • 1,000-nit display brightness

What it lacks:

  • Always-on display (the screen turns off when you lower your wrist)
  • Blood oxygen sensor
  • ECG app
  • Temperature sensor
  • U1/U2 chip for Precision Finding

The always-on display is the most noticeable omission. Without it, the watch face goes dark when you are not actively looking at it. Some people find this unacceptable. Others do not notice because they only look at their watch when they want to know the time, which is -- historically speaking -- the entire purpose of a watch.

Who should buy it:

  • First-time Apple Watch buyers who want to evaluate the platform without a $399 commitment
  • Parents purchasing for children via Family Setup
  • Anyone who values the phrase "good enough" as a compliment rather than an insult
  • Budget-conscious buyers who would prefer to spend the $150-$200 savings on something else entirely

At $199, the SE offers approximately 85% of the Apple Watch experience for 50% of the Series 11 price. We computed this percentage by listing every feature of the Series 11, assigning each a usage-weighted score, and summing the SE's scores. The methodology is available upon request. Nobody has requested it.

Model 2: Apple Watch Series 11

Price: $399-$449 MSRP / ~$299-$329 street

The Series 11 is the default recommendation. It is the Apple Watch for people who want an Apple Watch. This sentence is circular but accurate.

What it adds over the SE:

  • Always-on Retina display (2,000 nits, up from 1,000)
  • Blood oxygen sensor and ECG
  • Temperature sensing for cycle tracking and sleep data
  • S11 chip with Neural Engine
  • Thinner case (9.7mm, the thinnest Apple Watch to date)
  • Wider display (the screen fills more of the front surface)
  • Water depth gauge and water temperature sensor
  • Faster charging (0 to 80% in approximately 30 minutes)

Size selection: 42mm vs 46mm

This is the question the Editorial Staff receives most frequently, which we find both flattering and slightly odd.

The 42mm model weighs 30 grams and has a display area of 953 square millimeters. The 46mm model weighs 36.4 grams and has a display area of 1,220 square millimeters. The 46mm display is 28% larger.

Our guidance:

  • Wrist circumference under 160mm: The 42mm will look proportional. The 46mm may appear to be wearing you.
  • Wrist circumference 160-180mm: Either size works. Choose based on whether you prefer more screen or less weight.
  • Wrist circumference over 180mm: The 46mm. It will look right. The 42mm may look like it belongs to someone else.

We measured our wrists. We will not disclose the results.

Who should buy it:

  • Most people. We do not say this lightly. We say it after extensive comparison and with full awareness that "most people" is a recommendation that lacks the specificity our readers expect. We offer it nonetheless.
  • Anyone upgrading from a Series 7 or older
  • Users who want always-on display and health sensors without paying Ultra prices
  • People who wear their watch to bed and want temperature-based sleep insights

Model 3: Apple Watch Ultra 2

Price: $799 MSRP / ~$719 street

The Ultra 2 is the Apple Watch for people who do things that would void the warranty on a normal Apple Watch, except the Ultra 2's warranty anticipates these things.

What it adds over the Series 11:

  • 49mm titanium case (larger, heavier, significantly more durable)
  • 36-hour battery life (vs ~18 hours on Series 11)
  • Action Button (customizable physical button)
  • Dual-frequency GPS (L1 + L5 for better accuracy in challenging terrain)
  • Depth gauge rated to 100 meters (vs 50 meters on Series 11)
  • 86-decibel siren for emergencies
  • Three built-in microphones for improved wind noise reduction

Who should buy it:

  • Scuba divers, open-water swimmers, and triathlon athletes
  • Multi-day hikers and trail runners who cannot charge nightly
  • Outdoor professionals and first responders
  • People with large wrists who prefer a 49mm case

Who should not buy it:

  • People who want a big watch because it looks impressive. It does look impressive. But $400 of additional impressive can be deployed elsewhere.
  • Gym-only fitness users. The Series 11 tracks indoor workouts identically.
  • Anyone whose primary outdoor activity is walking to the parking lot. We say this without judgment. It is a valid outdoor activity. It does not require dual-frequency GPS.

The Decision Tree

We promised a decision tree. Here it is, rendered in text because our whiteboard photograph was, upon review, illegible.

Question 1: Is your budget under $250?
Yes -> Apple Watch SE ($199 street). Stop here.
No -> Continue.

Question 2: Do you scuba dive, run ultramarathons, or hike multi-day backcountry routes?
Yes -> Apple Watch Ultra 2 ($719 street). Stop here.
No -> Continue.

Question 3: Do you want an always-on display?
Yes -> Apple Watch Series 11 ($349 street). Stop here.
No -> Reconsider the SE. Seriously. It is very good.

This decision tree has three nodes. We spent four hours designing it. We are aware of the irony.

GPS vs GPS + Cellular

Every model is available with or without cellular connectivity (LTE). The cellular version adds $100 and requires a separate monthly plan ($10-$12/month with most carriers).

The cellular model lets you leave your iPhone at home and still receive calls, texts, and stream music. The GPS-only model requires your iPhone to be nearby for these functions.

The Editorial Staff surveyed its members on cellular usage. Of those with cellular models, 3 out of 5 admitted they "rarely" leave their phone behind. The remaining 2 use it during runs. The annual cost of cellular capability for occasional phone-free runs: $120-$144. We present this without recommendation because personal finance is personal.

Timing Your Purchase

Apple typically announces new Apple Watch models in September. Prices on current models drop in August (anticipation discounts) and October (post-launch clearance of previous generation). If you are reading this in March 2026, you are approximately five months from the best deals on the current lineup.

However, waiting five months to save an additional $20-$40 represents a cost-per-day-of-delayed-ownership that the Editorial Staff computed and then decided not to publish because even we have limits.

All models are listed at current best prices on our deals page. We verified them this morning while drinking coffee and feeling neither rushed nor relaxed.
