AirPods Max vs Sony WH-1000XM5: A $150 Question With a Very Loud Answer
Apple wants $549 MSRP for headphones. Sony wants $399. Both are regularly on sale. One of them is a dramatically better value, and I have opinions.

The AirPods Max launched at $549. The Sony WH-1000XM5 launched at $399. But nobody pays MSRP anymore — the real street prices as of early 2026 hover around $449 for the Max (USB-C model) and $248-$298 for the Sony XM5. That's a gap of $150-$200 for headphones that, on paper, do the same thing.

Sound Quality: Closer Than Apple Wants You to Think
The AirPods Max sound phenomenal. Rich, detailed, with a soundstage that makes you feel like the music is happening around you rather than inside your skull. Apple's computational audio does real work here — Spatial Audio with head tracking on Apple Music is a genuine "whoa" moment the first time you try it.
The Sony XM5? Also sounds phenomenal. Slightly warmer signature, excellent bass response, and Sony's DSEE Extreme upscaling makes even mediocre Spotify streams sound better than they should. The soundstage is narrower than the Max, but the detail retrieval is arguably better in the mids.

Battery Life
Sony XM5: 30 hours with ANC on. Thirty. You can fly roundtrip to Tokyo and back without charging.
AirPods Max: 20 hours with ANC on. Respectable, but 33% less. And the Max have that bizarre sleep mode issue where they drain battery in the case if you don't put them in it just right.

The Sony does almost everything as well or better, at $150 less, in a more comfortable package, with better battery life.
The Verdict (I Promised Opinions)
The AirPods Max are a luxury item. They're the Porsche Cayenne of headphones — objectively capable, undeniably premium, but you're paying a significant markup for the badge. If you're deep in the Apple ecosystem and money isn't a primary concern, they're lovely.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 are the better headphones for the vast majority of humans. Better comfort, better battery, better ANC, better value. If I could only own one pair, it's the Sony every single time.
Buy the AirPods Max if: You're all-Apple, you value build quality over comfort, and you have $449 that isn't doing anything else.
Buy the Sony XM5 if: You are a person who exists in the world and wants excellent headphones without overpaying.
The $150 you save? Put it toward a nice DAC. Or 50 grande lattes. Or just keep it, because $150 is $150 and the Sony sounds great.
