The Credit Card Points Game: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Swipe

Let me paint you a picture. Two people walk into the same store, buy the same $500 TV, and walk out. One of them just spent $500. The other one spent $500 AND earned $25 in cashback, 2,500 points toward a flight, and 5% back through a shopping portal.
Same TV. Same price. One person played the game. One didn't even know there was a game.
Welcome to the game.
The Holy Trinity of Stacking
Every purchase you make online should hit three layers. I call it the Holy Trinity, and unlike the theological version, this one is very easy to understand:
Layer 1: The Portal. Before you buy ANYTHING online, you open a cashback portal. Rakuten, TopCashback, your card's own shopping portal — doesn't matter which, just pick the one paying the highest rate. This alone puts 1-15% back in your pocket. Free money. Sitting on the table. Most people walk right past it.
Layer 2: The Card. You're not still using a debit card, are you? Please tell me you're not. A no-annual-fee 2% cashback card is the bare minimum. If you're spending in a bonus category — say, 5x on online shopping during a Chase Freedom quarter — that's where things get spicy.
Layer 3: The Pregame. This is the advanced move. Before you make the purchase, you buy a discounted gift card for that retailer. Sam's Club, Costco, various gift card exchanges — 5-10% off face value is common. So now your $500 TV is purchased with a gift card you bought for $450.
Do the Math With Me
$500 TV. Gift card bought for $450 (saved $50). Cashback portal at 3% ($15). Credit card at 5x ($25 in points). That's $90 in value on a single purchase. You just got an 18% return on a TV that wasn't even on sale.
I'll wait while you go check your recent purchases and calculate what you left on the table.
But Won't This Take Forever?
Nope. Once you build the habit, it adds maybe 90 seconds to any purchase. Open portal. Click through. Pay with right card. Done. Those 90 seconds just earned you $15-50. Show me a job that pays $600-2,000 an hour and I'll... actually, this IS that job.
Start Simple
Don't try to optimize everything on day one. Start with the portal. Just that. Get the browser extension, let it remind you when cashback is available, and collect your free money. After a month, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.
Then add the right credit card. Then start pregaming with gift cards. Before you know it, you're running the play on autopilot and your points balance looks like a phone number.
