Cashback portals are basically standing on the street corner offering you free money and most people walk right past them like they're invisible. "No thanks, I prefer paying full price!" said no rational person ever, and yet here we are.
But which portal should you use? They all claim to offer the best rates. They all have browser extensions that pop up at checkout. They all want to be your one and only. It's like dating but with better returns.
The Contenders
Rakuten — The popular kid. Everybody knows Rakuten. Big name brands, reliable payments (quarterly via PayPal or check), and a browser extension so smooth you forget it's there. Rates are solid if not always the highest. Think of Rakuten as the reliable Honda Civic of cashback. Not exciting, never lets you down.
TopCashback — The overachiever. Frequently beats Rakuten's rates by 0.5-2%. The interface looks like it was designed by someone who hates fun, but when you're getting 8% instead of 6%, aesthetics stop mattering real quick. Payments are reliable. The no-frills approach is actually kind of refreshing.
Capital One Shopping — The passive player. Install the extension, forget about it, and it automatically finds coupon codes and cashback. You won't earn as much as actively choosing the best portal, but you'll earn something on purchases you would've otherwise missed. It's the "set it and forget it" option.
Our Testing Results
We spent three months routing purchases through different portals and tracking actual payouts:
TopCashback had the highest rate 55% of the time. Rakuten had the highest rate 35% of the time. Others split the remaining 10%.
BUT — and this is a big but — Rakuten tracked more reliably. We had two purchases not track on TopCashback versus zero on Rakuten. A higher rate means nothing if the purchase doesn't track.
The Optimal Strategy
